Thom Trojanowski

Coulisse is proud to present Sympathetic Magic, Thom Trojanowski’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and in Sweden. Exploring transformation through the intertwined languages of the body and the natural world, Trojanowski presents a series made using batik on cotton canvas and dye for the first time, considering pregnancy as a state of continual becoming, in which familiar forms shift, expand, and give way to something unknown. Rooted in mythology, ecology, folk narratives, and personal memory, Trojanowski's practice has long explored the porous boundaries between human and non-human life. His paintings and immersive environments conjure otherworldly landscapes where bodies merge with trees, organic structures take on anatomical qualities, and the natural world appears both nurturing and threatening. In Sympathetic Magic, these concerns turn inward, towards the body as a landscape undergoing its own processes of growth, disruption and renewal. The exhibition's title refers to the belief that things may influence one another through resemblance or contact. In Trojanowski's work, these correspondences unfold between bodies and landscapes, organs and flowers, skin and earth. Forms appear to exchange qualities, suggesting an interconnected world in which transformation is both physical and symbolic.
